Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized this was not the best location for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her show in the year 1996.
