O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials.
